Smallville Mid-Season Checkup: What We Love, What We Loath

We admit it -- we were worried about Smallville coming back this season. The show lost two of its most important characters when Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk declined to return as regular characters, and early news suggested that the producers were shoveling characters into the scripts to replace them. How could the show go on without Lex? What kind of character would Doomsday be, if he wasn't the big ball of indestructible rage from the comics? How many more variations of Clark saving the day with the rest of the world none the wiser could the writers really come up with?

We needn't have worried: This season rocks! Now that we're cooling our heels with no new episodes until the New Year, we've decided to look back on some of the things that have made the show so much fun -- plus the bits that we could have done without.

What we loved:

Doomsday delights: We were dubious when The Powers That Be announced Doomsday as the Big Bad, but we are more than happy to admit that we were wrong. Davis Bloom/Doomsday rocks, in large part because Sam Witwer is our new favorite man on TV. His Davis is a sweetheart -- smitten with Chloe (and wow, the chemistry between the two of them!), genial with Jimmy, sometimes prickly with Clark, and always a fully rounded character that we loved to watch. The slow build where we got more and more hints that something wasn't... quite...right about Mr. Bloom was terrific and heartbreaking. We can't wait to see what happens next.

Reasons to be Thankful

The CW Cornucopia
As we prepare for the annual Festival of Starch and tryptophan-induced food coma that is Thanksgiving, we've been pondering the things we're thankful for this season on the CW. Here's what's running through our heads as we count our blessings this year:

Gossip Girl

  • Chuck Bass, always and forever.
  • Jenny Humphrey finally washed off the Heavy Eye Liner of Rebellion. We like our fresh-faced Little J!
  • Nate is starting to get interesting! We can't say we agree with his method of choosing a girlfriend (like Jackie says, he apparently dates anyone who's standing in front of him at that moment), but we're liking the Nate/Jenny/Vanessa dynamic.

One Tree Hill

  • The Scott Family -- Nathan, Haley and Jamie. It's great to see such a loving young family on TV!
  • The folks on One Tree Hill are still able to surprise us, either by going for a completely cheeserific theme episode, or by turning up the dial on the drama, like in the most recent episode.
  • Nanny Carrie is seriously, honestly, not-coming-back dead. We don't mind Ghost Q, but we better never see Nanny Carry haunting anyone!

Smallville: Wedding Jitters

Well, it WAS a lovely wedding, at first....
Romance is in the air on this week’s gripping episode of Smallville. Chloe and Jimmy get ready for their big day and even Lois and Clark share a few lingering stares. Crazy things happen when people get all gussied up!

First, we see Chloe and Jimmy’s wedding day through the lens of a jumpy camcorder a la Cloverfield and we’re tipped off early on that things don’t end well for the happy couple. Then, we jump back in time eight hours to fill in the missing pieces.

Lois plays the part of the perfect wedding planner, transforming the Kent barn into a fairytale destination. She’s struggling with a bit of bride envy (who can blame her?) and Jimmy plants the idea in her head that, “Lois and Clark would be great together.” Meddlesome boy! Davis phone-stalks Chloe – as if she didn’t have enough to worry about. And Oliver and Clark run after cyberspace routers that seem to imply Lex is out there sending emails.

Smallville: Faded memories

Well, it's a kiss... will that satisify the Chlarkers?
This week’s riveting episode of Smallville found Chloe losing her mind…literally. Thanks to Brainiac, Clark’s BFF can’t remember the people and places she loves – not even her own fiancé and their nuptials are just one week away. Poor Jimmy! As she tries to put up a brave front and hide her piecemeal memory from those close to her, Chloe confides in Clark the severity of Brainiac’s hold on her noggin. We felt an uncomfortable jolt when Chloe lead Clark into her secret room of CliffsNotes. With papers and profiles of Smallville’s familiar faces plastered on all the discernable wall space, it eerily reminded us of a similar scene in “A Beautiful Mind.” Of course, Russell Crowe’s character was suffering from delusions, where Brainiac is actually replacing Chloe’s memories with Kryptonian data – including one reoccurring symbol for doom. Can we say foreshadowing?

Clark decides the only remedy to this situation involves paying a visit to the Arctic and rebuilding the Fortress of Solitude to seek Jor-El’s guidance. While Clark reconnects with his father, Jimmy admits Chloe to the hospital for an MRI. The brain scan finally wipes out all of Chloe’s memories except for Davis’ lingering face. She immediately seeks him out and in a chivalrous move Davis returns Chloe to Jimmy and Clark.

Clark brings Chloe to Jor-El to restore her memory, but Clark makes one request: that Chloe wake up without the knowledge of his secret. It’s too dangerous for Chloe to know about his special abilities and even though Clark laments hiding the truth from her, letting her go is the best way to protect her. It broke our hearts to see the agony on Clark’s face as he bid goodbye to his lone confidant.

Smallville: Family ties

Clark and Kara wonder why they couldn't have had their family reunion at DisneyWorld.
It’s family reunion time on the latest installment of Smallville. Clark and Lois find themselves transported to the desolate mountainous region known as the Phantom Zone after anonymously receiving the crystal Tess discovered in the Arctic. Upon a bumpy and bloody landing, they encounter Clark’s Kryptonian cousin Kara, who looks like she just finished filming “Sheena: “Queen of the Jungle.” Lois thinks they’ve all been abducted by aliens and fears the trio will die on this godforsaken planet.

Kara reveals there is an escape hatch able to return Lois and Clark back to Earth that opens with drops of her own blood. Despite this clear cut escape route in place, Kara chose not to utilize the portal herself to exit this torturous prison in order to keep the Zoners from sneaking out along with her and wrecking havoc on Earth. Clark and Kara convince Lois to go ahead without them through the portal and sure enough, a Zoner follows. And not just any Zoner, General Zod’s wife, Faora follows on Lois’ heels and quickly possesses the girl’s body to search for her son.

Back on Earth, Chloe stumbles upon remnants of Clark and Lois’ disappearance and finds Clark’s crystal. She convinces Oliver to steal a generator from Tess Mercer so she can hack into alien technology and read the data contained within the crystal. As she taps into the crystals powers, Chloe’s nose starts to bleed and her eyes turn white, completely freaking out Oliver. Whatever Chloe does to control the crystal, it somehow brings back both Clark and an uncertain Kara from the Phantom Zone.

Exclusive! Smallville's Justin Hartley on Costumes and Comedy

Last night, Oliver Queen was back on Smallville, helping Clark save the day -- and guard his identity. Our own Jason C. talks with Smallville hottie Justin Hartley about Ollie's downward spiral, the joy of weaponry, and how superhero costumes and comedy aren't mutually exclusive. Check it out!

Smallville: Look! Up in the Sky! (Or More Accurately, On Top of that Building!)

You know, I'm not just another pretty face, Clark. I have a brain!

Clark Kent took one more step toward becoming Superman this week on Smallville -- and it was a doozy. Jimmy Olsen has been theorizing about a hero for Metropolis for a while, and this week, he got proof -- sort of. When Lois is attacked by a mugger and thrown in in the path of a speeding car, Clark superspeeds to the rescue. Unfortunately, Jimmy is aiming his camera at Lois and her attacker, so he catches a red-blue blur swooping her to safety. Now he's determined to find the hero -- and he wants Clark to help.

So now Clark's singing the "Oh Noes! My Secret!" blues, but the people who know him -- and his secret -- are tired of that tune. Chloe thinks this is a great opportunity for Clark to develop a heroic alter-ego, someone who would give the good people of Metropolis hope. And Ollie emerges from his drunken debauchery to sneer at Clark and tell him to suck it up.

Things take a turn when Jimmy figured out this hero seems to have gotten his start in Smallville, he wears red and blue, he always shows up just at the right time.... wait a second! It's Clark! That explains everything, including the bond between him and Chloe! Clark denies it, but he superspeeds to Chloe's to panic in her general direction. Unfortunately, Jimmy appears soon thereafter. And as he sped there in a car, and Clark STILL beat him there... well, what more evidence does he need?

Smallville: Who Can You Trust?

A series of grisly murders is rocking Metropolis on Smallville , and cuddly paramedic Davis Bloom tends to be the first responder on site. In fact, the only person more likely to be at the scene of a murder or accident or incident of bloody dismemberment is Clark Kent himself. That's because Clark is spending his nights huddled over the police scanner, trying to rescue ever imperiled soul in the city.

Davis and Clark run into each other at the Ace of Clubs, where something has just caused a hell of a lot of carnage. Davis is unconscious and covered in blood, so Clark tells him to go to the hospital. Davis does, but under his own power. He discovers (in a shower scene that we had to watch a couple of times just to make sure we covered the episode accurately-- the things we do for you!) that none of the blood is his own -- Davis doesn't have a scratch anywhere (and we do mean anywhere) on his body. What's going on?

Meanwhile, Chloe is attempting her own heroic endeavor -- she's set up a support group for hte meteor-infected. It ain't easy -- the kids are suspicious of her motive, each other, the non-infected, and the list goes on. It gets worse when Clark, suspecting that the nightclub killer is a meteor freak, speed-reads Chloe's membership roster and give the information to the police -- namely, a new detective named John Jones. Yep, it's Martian Manhunter! He's using her detecting skills to make up for the fact she doesn't have his alien superpowers anymore. He's also keeping busy keeping Clark's do-gooder missions under wraps.

Exclusive: Smallville's Sam Witwer on Davis and Doomsday

Have we mentioned lately how much we love Sam Witwer? The Smallville actor is smart, funny, honest, open (except when it comes to spoilers -- curses!), and very easy on the eyes. Too bad he's playing a guy who will end up doing very, very bad things!

Our own Jason C. talked to Sam about what attracted him to the part, what Davis' first thoughts about Clark were (they involve things like "why is he so tall, he's got great hair..."), the role of Chloe in his character arc (and in the show), and the inevitable conflict we're all waiting for. As Sam says, "If you bring Doomsday on, and If they don't throw down by the end of the season, what are you doing?"

Warning: If you're completely averse to anything spoiler, we did pry a couple of comments out of Sam that may qualify.

Smallville: Lovers in a Dangerous Time

Lois and Clark take part in a new reality show that's almost as bad as 'Moment of Truth'

Someone on the Smallville writing staff seems to be seriously ambivalent about love lately! Last week, we had intergalactic sex bomb Maxima looking for her perfect mate and mowing down mere mortals right and left. This week, an insane jeweler takes it upon himself to quiz engaged couples to judge their fitness for matrimony -- and he kills those that fail the test. Normally Clark could handle this sort of garden-variety psycho, but this one's got a kryptonite-enhanced watch band. Who knew that glowing green rocks were so fashionable?

Psycho Love Guy kidnaps Chloe and Jimmy after their engagement party and puts them to the test. He hooks them up to lie detectors and administers a shock if they lie. The twist? He shocks the other half of the couple, because "Lies don't hurt you, lies hurt the one you love!" All righty then! Fortunately, both Jimmy and Chloe can honestly say that they aren't in love with anyone else. He releases them, and apparently thinks they'll be so happy that they know it's true love that they won't call the cops. He's wrong.

When Lois recovers from her hangover and realizes that Chloe and Jimmy are gone, she and Clark go on the hunt. Lois decides to set a trap for the kidnapper, and she and Clark pose as a couple in love. Unfortunately, they run into Oliver, who is gobsmacked by the announcement that his friend and his ex are getting hitched.

Smallville: Intergalactic Booty Call!

As Alien sex goddess Maxima approaches, Clark ponders the eternal question: 'Who farted?'
Now this was an episode of Smallville we could all relate to! After all, who hasn't looked around at the local dating pool without occasionally wanting to go to another planet to find a real date. Unfortunately, most of us don't have access to a teleportation bracelet, so we have to stick with internet ads and the occasional blind date.

But Maxima? She must have felt like her cosmic Match.com profile finally got a wink when Tess' tame scientist accidentally sent off a Kryptonian beacon when they were trying to unlock the secret of the crystal found at the site of Lex's disappearance. See, Maxima is the queen of a race of superpowered, superstrong women, and the men on her planet just aren't cutting it (like we said, we can relate!) When she sees the beacon, she comes a-running -- and the bodies start piling up. Unfortunately, Maxima's kiss is so hot it gives mortal men a fatal coronary (Again, we can.. oh, who are we kidding.) So she leaves a bunch of studly corpses in her wake as she searches for Mr. Kryptonian Right.

Happy Birthday, Aaron Ashmore!

Happy birthday to Smallville's Aaron Ashmore, the man behind our favorite gee-whiz photographer, Jimmy Olsen. Aaron turns 29 today.

Aaron has had a long acting career for such a young guy. He and his identical twin, Shawn, started acting in commercials when they were young, and they've never looked back. Since making his feature film debut in 1991, he's appeared on great shows like The West Wing and Veronica Mars. Then came the role of Jimmy Olsen, which Aaron jumped at.

He's kept busy in his downtime, too, appearing with Supernatural's Jared Padalecki in the straight-to-video holiday film The Christmas Cottage. Plus, he's working on two movies -- Dead End, a teens-in-peril thriller costarring Haley Duff and Privileged’s Lucy Hale, and The Thaw, and eco-thriller about an ancient parasite revealed by the melting polar ice.

Jimmy Olsen hasn't been kicking back, either. Last season, he got to put on the James Bond gear and play superspy to protect Chloe. He kicked off this season when Chloe accepted his marriage proposal. We have a feeling things won't go smoothly for the couple -- Chloe's developing new powers, and she's also developing an attraction to Davis Bloome. We can't wait to find out what happens!

Leave your birthday wishes for Aaron in the comments!

Smallville Digs Into Green Arrow's Past

Smallville delved into the past to show us how Ollie came to be Green Arrow, how Tess and Ollie met, and how incredibly hot Ollie is without his shirt on. OK, that last bit may not have been the point of the episode, but we appreciate it nonetheless.

When Ollie nearly passes out at a big charity 'do (staffed with half-naked waiters and waitresses, natch), Chloe and Clark are there to catch him. The press thinks he's just drunk, but Clark and Chloe know better. Ollie refuses to let them take him to the hospital -- he knows what's doing this to him, and he knows that conventional medical treatment will kill him. How does he know this? Because it's happened before.

Years ago, Ollie washed up on an island after a shipwreck, and developed his awe-inspiring archery skills (it took him a while, but hunger is a great motivator). Then, after two years of lonely exile, he hears other human voices -- and immediately manages to scratch himself with an incredibly toxic plant that he'd somehow avoided up until now. Whatever -- it leads to sweaty, shirtless Ollie scenes, so we're ok with it.

Exclusive! Justin Hartley on Ollie's Past and a "Toxic" Episode

We're loving the fact the Justin Hartley's Oliver Queen is playing a bigger role on Smallville this year -- the character is great, and Justin is always fantastic to talk to! Jason C. sits down with Justin to get the scoop on Ollie's past, his multiple costume changes, his relationship with Tess, and the other women in Ollie's life. Plus, he gives us a hint into just what happens to send him into a "Toxic" shock. Needless to say, we've got some mild spoilers ahead, so don't watch if you don't want to know!
