Supernatural: Hungry for Love

Gah! Ew! Blech! Supernatural said "I love you" in the way only it could -- by hitting us hit up with a particularly horrific opening scenario. We're still recovering. The site of people taking chunks out of each other -- and liking it -- was sickening enough. But what really got us was the realization that after being literally eaten alive, one of the lovers was "still chewing a little." Gah!

Happy Valentine's Day indeed, Supernatural!

So yeah, it took us a while for the nausea to subside. But after that, we found plenty that was, um, tasty about the ep:

Meeting (a) Cupid
Now that? That was funny. We were loving the slightly goofy, moderately dumb, and completely oblivious lug from the moment he picked Dean up in a rapturous bear hug. And we loved that he wouldn't be denied his snuggles, no matter how much the guys tried to escape (although we wonder if Jared, Jensen and Misha were having con flashbacks.) But the best part? How horrified the guys were to be dealing with a big fuzzy puppy/child hybrid in the form of a large naked man. And it sounds like all Cupids are like this. Hee!

There's more after the jump -- read on!

Cas' appetites
Holy crap, Cas is eating! And eating... and eating... and eating... it's amazing that his stomach didn't burst from all the burgers. We loved how calm and matter-of-fact he was about it all. When Dean asks him how many he's consumed, Cas just shrugs and says "it's in the low hundreds." Eep!

Famine's bad-assery
OK, so Famine's this decrepit old man demon in a wheelchair. How dangerous can he be? HAH! Just ask the guy who plunged his face into the boiling oil to sate his appetite for french fries, or the demon who lost the Twinkie-lover's soul. Possibly our favorite part: the way the minion demons looked askance when Famine offered them up to quench Sammy's thirst. Dudes -- you're hanging with a Horseman of the Apocalypse. What did you THINK was going to happen?

Sammy's bad-assery
Oh, Sam!! He did his damnedest to insulate himself from bloodlust, but Famine made it impossible for him to resist. Still, when push came to shove, Sam expelled the demons rather than drinking them down. And the way he took out Famine by... ok, we're not entirely sure what he did, but it was like the demons were Diet Coke and Sam's mojo was a pack of Mentos. Bad. Ass.

Dean's rationalization -- and his reaction
We were wondering what the deal was with Dean's immunity to the hunger that struck everyone else. We were theorizing it had something to do with Michael, or with his time in Hell, but we were unsure. So when Cas asked Dean why he didn't have the munchies, we were all ears. "You're saying you're just well-adjusted?" Cas asks. "God no! I'm just well fed." Works for us.

So when Famine met Dean and announced that he had no appetite because he was dead inside, we bridled -- and we're not buying it. He's overwhelmed and terrified, but soulless? Defeated? Completely empty? Nope, not our boy. As evidence, we point to his reaction when Sam was going through Demon Detox again. Dean literally cried to the heavens for help, but got no answer. If he was empty, defeated, would he even try to find help? Would our hearts breaks as we watched his break again? We don't think so.

So what did you think of the ep? And what the heck are we going to do for SIX WEEKS until the show comes back (with zombies!)? Talk about it in the comments!

What happened to Dean's ring in the "My Bloody Valentine" episode, he wasn't wearing it.

I took the “dead inside” comment in a totally different way. I mean, look who it’s coming from – a demon, the horseman Famine! Let’s theorize – would Famine consider himself “dead inside”? Interesting question. It’s sort of a point-of-view situation, don’t you think? I actually thought that Famine was saying Dean just didn’t crave anything. I mean, we’re talking about a guy who eats when he’s hungry, get’s a little action when he’s got the itch, kicks butt when it suits him and loves the people in his life without restriction (hello! his bro is addicted to demon blood). He’s not really dead inside, he’s just NOT hungry for anything. Therefore he’s “dead” to Famine’s evil design.

I don't think Dead is dead on the inside. If he is, why does Michael, the most powerful of all angels, still chooses him as his true vessel? Bloodlines aside, I don't believe that angels choose their vessels from soulless humans. Despite the deeds of Uriel, Raphael and Zachariah, I think the humans they choose must be the ones that "stand out from all the rest".
Surely this isn't something that a soulless being can achieve?

I believe in what I see, and compared to Sam, I see Dean extremely alive.

Sam is the character who is DEAD. He doesn’t have a different opinion about anything, he doesn’t have meaningful lines, he has no personality, he has no passion, he doesn’t preach at the end of the episode like Dean, he doesn’t laugh, he doesn’t joke, he doesn’t seem to be happy, nor does he seem to be sad.

Season 5 Sam is not season 1,2,3&4 Sam. This Sam is dead. Where is the independent, secure, passionate chin-up guy (good or evil who cares) we saw from season 1 to season 4?

There’s no need of Sam anymore, there is no storyline for him. Sam is a "lost case" even before he was born; emotionally and psychologically speaking, he is the brother who should be more damaged, and there is no interest in showing his motivations and/or feelings.

Ps. Excuse any spelling or grammar mistake, I am not a native speaker.

First I like to extend my CONGRATULATIONS! to the cast and crew for being picked up for another season on the CW, am THRILLED,OVERJOYED with excitement, hehehe, am glad the CW decided to pick up the show it's the only reason why I watch the CW.

Now about the last episode aired, I FRIGGIN LOVED IT! it was bloody, funny, dramatic and intense all rolled up into one fantastic night. My favorite scenes was when Dean PUNCHED the Cupid and he disappeared and he turns around and says"where did he go?" Cas says"You punched him" Dean "I punched a DICK!" Hilarious, and when Sam tells Dean in the hotel room that he is hungry and Dean says "for what? Demon blood?"

I must say that I was sad when Sam finally gave in to drinking Demon blood because I thought for sure he had overcome that addiction with the help of Dean and Bobby **Sad face**

As far as Dean being SOULLESS or DEAD INSIDE? Nope, don't buy it either, Dean has a big heart and a kind soul, otherwise, like everyone has pointed out, he would give a CRAP what happened to his brother or the whole world and would have just giving in to the offer of becoming Michael's vessels. The ending just tore me apart, just looking up to the heavens for a response, for a sign of compassion, aahh, just turned me into mush, lol. Can't wait to see what Kripke has in store for us on the next episode on March 25th.

Few other favourite Cupid moments are :
Cas's (girl-ish) scream after Cupid hugs him..again, when he was trying to console him.Hee!

Cas/Misha trying to hide his smile when cupid turns to them rubbing his belly, after hugging Sam.

I seriously dont think Dean is soulless or "dead inside". I just think with the recent events & simultaneous failures,he is broken &lost his sense of pleasure.
Throughout this season so far, various external/celestial agents have been trying to break Dean & Sam, mentally, forcing them to say "yes" to their respective hosts. Horsemen was simply & very conveniently feeding off Dean's biggest insecurities, his sense of self loathing& feeling inadequate & lack of self worth(which is what the hallucination shrink pointed out as well, in Sam interrupted). So this was just another way of Horsemen to push him over the edge,(Now why would a Horsemen care if Michael gets his vessel is another question, but my guess is that they have bought the front row tickets to Michael Vs Lucifer deathmatch & hence they want both contenders to get their ideal meatsuits (totally making stuff up ;))

Dean's plea for help at the end indicates that his soul is very much intact, he is showing signs of faith & he still cares for things that truly matter to him aka Sam.All he needs is a ray of hope that some higher power/greater good is on his side which can rescue them.

I also think there is more to this than meets the eye,(Yellow fever dejavu :when it was earlier established that the reason why only Dean caught the ghost sickness was coz he was a dick, but we later found out that because he was keeping a secret, it made him susceptible),so i wont be surprised if we later get an elaborate explanation to why Famine didnt/couldnt affect Dean, actually i am hoping we do.

Only in Supernatural "Gross" means "I love you"!

I so love this episode! Although it makes me wanna skip Valentine's this year.

Dean's souls is definitely not dead. But it is broken. Maybe some part of it is in hell. They did keep on mentioning in season 4 that Dean was not "all there". Although I don't get what would wanna make the demons tell him that it's dead. Won't that push Dean slightly to say 'yes'?

Please show reruns of Supernatural on weekends or something! If I miss the new episode on thursday there's no way I can catch up! If you showed older episodes sometime in the morning or maybe at night then maybe the ratings wouldn't be so low.
A show like this can't get new viewers if it's only shown once a week.

While Dean has been through a lot, I think Dean is just finally growing out of his "womanizing/man-whoring ways", in the last few weeks he's been commenting about wanting normal/"safe" he's made at least two comments about wanting to settle down with a wife and kids. JMO.

That was a solid episode, I would give it a strong respectable B! My only real complaint was the exorcism scene that seemed to go on forever where Dean just stood there in shock rather than cutting off Famine's finger. WTH?

I thought all actors did a tremendous job. The final scene with Ackles just broke me. He didn't need any dialog to convey what Dean was feeling. Ackles is just that good!

I had a few other favorite scenes as well. Like when Dean pointed out how condescending Sam's concern came off. Comparing Dean to a dog? Really? Sam has a habit of not always coming off sympathetic when dealing with his brother's feelings. I'm not implying that Sam doesn't care, it just that alot of the time his "concern" is combined with his curiosity and once that curiosity is satisfied, the concern flies out the window. Therefore Dean spilling his guts to Sam has never helped him and has often made him feel worse (hello season 4 and the hell trauma). I think that Dean realizes this also. I'm hoping that Sam will realize it as well and adjust his approach in the future.

I also appreciated Sam's honesty about his blood craving and I give him props for trying to fight it. Alas his efforts were in vain and he was forced to give into his hunger like everyone else. I felt bad for Sam. However he did not overcome anything when he didn't take Famine up on his offer to slurp up some more blood. The demon blood is not Sam's only weakness. Sam has a hunger for power and he revels in using that power, therefore was unable to resist under the circumstances. It's understandable because as I already stated everyone gave into temptation; but it was hardly a victory! Sam would probably concur.

Also I hope we are done with Sam's demon blood addiction/powers storyline. It does the character no favors and just makes him appear weak willed, disloyal, lazy and stupid. And I don't believe that he is any of those things!

The powers make it so that Sam doesn't have to be strong, smart,or couragous. All he has to do is stand there with is hand held out and look constipated! That's not strong or bad ass, it's just pathetic.

So Dean doesn't hunger for anything because he is dead inside? I always thought that term was reserved for people who were cold and without feeling. Dean feels more deeply than anyone else on the show. So is there another meaning that I'm missing?

Anyway good ep. I hope everyone enjoyed it. I can't wait for the show to return on March 25th.

I don't think Dean is dead inside. Dean was immune to Lust, and this was before he went to hell. Dean was also immune to War.
Dean is just different.

Dean dead or empty inside? No way, I don't think so... If he didn't have anything left, then he couldn't have cried to the heavens like that... I think that there is another reason, why the horseman didn't affect dean... I think it was because dean over Indulges himself with food, women, and booz and that is why the horseman did not affect him... Also did anyone else notice that most of the victims, hadn't indulged in something that they loved for a while? they held theirselves back from their desires, the horseman only let them out and cranked it up times a thousand... See dean never holds himself back... He wants something then he takes it... When dean was crying to the heavens for help it broke my heart... For a minute there, I even thought that dean was going to say yes to the angels because of how broken he looked... It was so sad, dean looked so defeated and broken... I can not wait to see what happens next???

SAM = BAMF X 305917591. Totally tragic and everything, especially him being back in the panic room. My heart basically breaks into a thousand pieces whenever I just think about the poor kid being down there. But the other part of me friggin' loves it. The whole demon blood thing is great for the story line, and it makes him a total badass. I'm so torn!

Anywho, on to Dean. I'm not buying the whole, "totally dead inside" thing. Sure, he doesn't exactly feel so hot. But... I dunno. To be honest, I think I'm just sick of hearing about Dean's sadness all the time as if it's some big, dramatic character reveal. Haven't we heard that like 4 times already? We understand. Dean's not exactly a happy camper.

I'm really curious about the "Heaven setting up John and Mary" idea. I hope they expand on that. And also, what Famine said to Sam, that he wouldn't die from drinking too much blood, that he's the "exception that proves the rule, just the way Satan wanted him to be." What in the hell does that even mean?

I really hope the writers explain why Azazel did what he did. Why he had to bleed into Sam's mouth so Lucifer could have his "special child." Why did he need demon blood? Did that make him the vessel? Did Lucifer want his vessel to be extra special? And why did Azazel have to make a bunch of other psychic kids if Sam was the only one Lucifer wanted? I mean, if Sam and Dean were destined all along to be vessels, and Azazel had orders from Lucifer himself to "sire him a child," why would he even bother making other kids?

ANOTHER QUESTION. What the hell did John know about all this? When he made the deal with YED, he said he knew something about Sam, like his destiny or whatever. How much of it did he know?

I have too many damn questions about this accursed show. I'm glad I got to vent about it right there, even though it has nothing to do with the actual episode. Sorry. =]

On a lighter note, Sam looked like he was in a shampoo commercial in MBV. It was awesome. And he was wearing the same shirt that Jared wore to Van Con. I love that shirt. And I love Sam. And Jared.

I LOVE THIS SHOW.

This was a great episode .. and what an ep to leave us with right before another Hellatus?!

I don't know exactly *what* the deal is regarding Dean, but not buying any soulless story. I could believe is different (either due to time in hell or just because of who he is the myth-arc, perhaps some part of that not yet revealed to us).

Dead? No. Maybe numb. *huggles him*

And like Dean has said before, demons lie...or in this case, scary old horsemen lie. There could be something bigger going on inside Dean.

Of course, the guy has been through A LOT. I think it plausible for him to kinda shut down a little bit. He is human after all.
