Smallville: You Have the Power!
Obviously, last night’s Smallville wasn’t new, but that shouldn’t come as a big surprise to anyone. So, instead of recapping a rerun, we took a little time to ponder two questions: What are the five best moments in the history of the show, and who are the five best villains? Hopefully, your brain is already racing to pick your favorites, but before we get to the top five lists, we want to address some of the comments on last week’s blog.

Yeah, we know: we love stirring the pot. But seriously, after Kristin’s interview in the comic magazine Wizard #209, we don’t believe she’ll be coming back any time soon. Here's what she said:
I’m not opposed to doing TV. I just want it to have a sense of the story it’s trying to tell, and the intent behind it. Working on TV for eight seasons is -- sometimes it’s a really great storyline, and sometimes it isn’t.
Which leads us into your complaints about where the writers are going with the show: where do you want them to go? Is there a particular path Clark needs to travel or a villain he needs to fight? Some fans want Season 8 to end with a big showdown with Doomsday, while others seem to want more moral shades of gray from the supporting cast.
Now for the top five lists. Here’s how we’ll do this: Check out the list we compiled, and then vote in the multiple-choice polls below. Choose all the ones you agree with and if there’s one or two (or all) that you disagree with, choose “Other”, then post a comment telling us your other option and why.
And yes, we absolutely love Top Five lists. They don’t force you to pick anything as the end-all, be-all and actually give you room for a guilty pleasure vote.
In no particular order, the Top Five Smallville Villains we love are:
- Lex Luthor
- Brainiac
- General Zod
- Lionel Luthor
- Zor-El
What about you?
Our Top Five Scenes in Smallville History (again, in no particular order):
- Lana’s death in The Phantom
- Alicia Baker’s death
- Jonathan Kent’s death
- the appearance of SuperGirl
- Alicia Baker’s transportation into Clark’s room (we couldn't find decent clips of these last two).
Now, we open it to you. Comment early and often, and remember to come back and check out what others have to say!
Comments
There are way too many Clana bashers post on here.
The show is Smallville not Superman. The Lana Lang character brought passion and fairly good acting to the show. Tom and Kristen have really good chemistry when they are acting together. That may be the reason why the writers chose to bring her back in season 8. The Lois is character is not that interesting to watch. We all know that Clark is destined to be with Lois, but frankly they should not have put her on the show, or at least found a better looking actress to take your mind off of Lana's beauty. No offense to the Clois fans here, but KK and CK are a beautiful pair to watch on screen. The writers did an excellent job in Lana's leaving in season 8. I think she should come back for the final season 10. Favorite scenes: Lana and Clark in the farmhouse saying their final goodbye(teared up). The look on Clark's face when Lana walked in to the reception at Chloe's wedding, The rescue of the flash and Lana's death.

Lana Who?
Honestly, Lana has always been Clark's green kryptonite. Life isn't supposed to go forward? Yes, of course ! And this move forward can't be done with Lana around. Now that this page is turned. Thank you Lex, bye Lana! Don't ever bring her back!
Villains :
My top 5 are Brainiac, Doomsday, Lex, Zod and Lionel Luthor.
My favourite moments in Smallville :
-FOS built in Arrival
-Lois meets Clark for the first time
-Kal-El flight in Crusade
-Justice League
-Lionel becoming Jor-El's vessel
For season 9:
-Sam Witwer back
-Michael Rosenbaum back (please, give him what he wants)
-Legion back
-more Clois
-Clark flying during the complete season

Since i feel way too strongly on the issue for my own good, and since i love too many moments to count, ill just say this:
personally, i have loved basically every clois moment so far this season (does anyone else think its weird that she went off with a dying Jimmy a while back and hasn't yet returned??)...They have all been pretty momentous and sweet.
Psh...and this coming from a former major Team Clana supporter! I used to dislike Lois, but now i cant imagine the show without Erica's presence, and i CANNOT STAND what Lana's character does to the show when she is there. Blech! Im glad that is finally settled, even if it seemed like a really poorly done episode IMO.

If Lana ever returns, I'll stop watching the show even if Erica Durance is in that episode. Yes that's true, even our Lois love won't make us watch that load of crap.
I'd love Lois and Clark to admit their feelings for each other before the finale and the classic, iconic moment of Clark dying in Lois's arms after his battle with Doomsday.
My Top 5 favorite moments are not on this list so I'll make my own:
1. Lois's introduction to Smallville. Nothing can ever beat that.
2. The building of fortress in Commencement.
3. Clark telling John Jones that he should leave his past behind in Odyssey.
4. Lois confessing her love for Clark in Committed. Heartbreaking!
5. Clark joining Daily Planet FINALLY!! And sitting across the desk with Lois. The most iconic moment of the mythos after Clark Kent donning the cape and becoming Superman!
Can't wait for Infamous.

Okay, let's tackle this in order.
Q: Could Lana return next season in a way that would benefit Clark and make you, the viewer, happy?
A: Hell No!
Why not? Because she should never have returned after Arctic, let alone Requiem. I've got nothing against Kristin as an actress but the character of Lana Lang in Smallville went from being a fairly nice 'princess' type to the power-hungry Lady Macbeth she once claimed everyone accused her of being (oh, the irony of that statement after the last few episodes). All Lana has managed to accomplish since Season 5 is the weakening and/or destruction of Clark's personality and character growth. When Clark's on screen with almost any other person (heck, even with Shelby!) you can see the man he will one day become. But, as soon as Lana re-enters his orbit, he goes to pieces quicker than he can blink (and as he's reminded us all, he can blink pretty fast). It's horrible to watch Clark regress into a teenager, especially after all the growing up he's accomplished since Odyssey.
Right, next poll...
Q: Which season finale would blow your mind (in a good way) the most?
A: Lois sweeps Clark off his Super feet
Why? Because I know the writers are somehow not going to do that, which is why it'd shock me if it happened. Somehow I get the feeling that there will be a showdown between Clark and Doomsday where they both kill each other (or in Clark's case, slows his heart right down to one beat a day or something stupendously slow that only a Kryptonian can survive on).
I'd like it if Lois either watches the battle or at least finds Clark's body and cradles him in her arms, á la the iconic Death of Superman comic image. I want Clark to struggle to tell Lois that he's the Red Blue Blur and that he loves her... and then he dies, and we're left with a great big "To Be Continued..." on the screen.
And then we get Season 9 in September. I can't stipulate that last sentence any more - do NOT pull a Quantum Leap on us.
Q: Are these your Top Five Smallville Villains?
A: Brainiac
As iconic as Lex Luthor is, he's outclassed by Brainiac as far as I'm concerned, at least in Smallville (and no that's not a slight on Michael Rosenbaum's fantastic portrayal - if anything, he's the best non-comic-based Lex Luthor ever). Brainiac is the perfect villain because he has no conscience, no morals, no humanity, and yet he strives to educate his foes no matter his unflattering opinion of them. James Marsters was the perfect choice for the role.
I would have voted Lionel, as a second choice, but I was never truly convinced of his villainous nature. Yes, he had one hell of a dark side yet he was so clearly conflicted with his own nature, moreso than Lex ever has been.
Q: Are these your Top Five Smallville Moments?
A: No
In no particular order, here are some of my favourite scenes:-
- Lois confessing to Clark that she can't take another heartbreak down the road (7x11 Siren)
- Clark helping Martha put on her necklace before the segue into the funeral scene, with Peter Gabriel's "I Grieve" (5x12 Reckoning)
- The nascent Justice League walking away from the 33.1 Facility as Oliver's bombs detonate (6x11 Justice)
- Lois and Clark on the rooftop of the Daily Planet for the first time, when Clark jumps to Olliver's balcony (6x13 Crimson)
- Clark reunited with Jonathan in 'limbo / the afterlife' and the ensuing conversation (5x17 Void)
- The last few minutes of season three's finalé, with the opera music playing, Lionel's hair being shaved off, Clark being sucked into the wall of the Kawatche Caves, Jonathan lying on the ground as if dead, Lex falling to the floor as he's poisoned, and Chloe's safe house exploding. (3x22 Covenant)
- Lois being forced to confess her love for Clark because she doesn't want him to be electrocuted (8x5 Committed)
There are dozens more, but those are the ones that have stuck in my mind most prominently to date. I'm pretty sure that Infamous will be adding one or two more, as will the finalé no doubt.
Anyway, that's my penny's worth. Give Erica Durance a new contract allowing her to be in all 22 episodes of season 9 - heaven knows she deserves it by now. If the 'Lana-arc' has proven anything it's that Lois Lane brings in the viewers.

I'm done with Smallville and this whiney Clark Kent will never be Superman. Well done on the showrunners for assassinating his character, along with Chloes' and Oliver's WHILE THE SHOW ONCE AGAIN REVOLVES AROUND LANA. They have managed to alienate the fanbases that would have stayed with the show and only pleased Lana fans who I doubt will remain watching now that KK has gone. An own goal. Note to showrunners; please go back to reading the "How to kill a successful TV series" manual.

On the villain list, you MUST include Davis/Dooms. His story is incomplete but up there right behind Lex, Lionel, and Brainiac for most intriguing and biggest threat. Zor-el? Loved him, but not for the intended reasons. Highly amusing in a mustache twirling manner and he gets all credit for SCIENCE!, but not one of the big baddies.
The top 5 scenes? Alicia was mildly interesting, but I can’t see her twice in anyone’s top 5.
1. Lionel getting his shaggy mane shaved set to operatic music while Clark is trapped in the caves, Jonathan lies presumably dying, Martha finds the field ablaze with Kryptonian symbols, Lex is poisoned and Chloe’s safe house explodes. Best by far!
2. The DP Vessel scene with the car crashing through the basement’s stained glass window and Chloe giving Clark a hero’s send off.
3. The Lana/Chloe fight in Delete. Awesome!
4. Dooms stealing the Bride and carrying her through the Fortress. Beautiful.
5. Transported to the snowy Arctic and the construction of the Fortress
6. Honorable mention goes to Chloe's hire at the DP. "Up, up and away!" Completely uplifting and filled with hope.

Oh dear God, do NOT let Kristin anywhere near the Smallville set unless she's just visiting her old workmates.
Lana Lang needs to stay FAR away from Clark, Smallville and Metropolis.

I never want to see Lana on Smallville again. She ruined the amazing season 8 and the worst part is she didn't have to. Kristin Kreuk's return could have been done tastful, but it wasn't.
Best event ever... two words, LOIS LANE! duh.

Well, how can those comments not be harsh?
The Lana arc was terribly awful, there was no closure, and no common sense in it.
I have to think Lanas running around with super powers?
That she would be with Clark if it wasnt for her sick desire for power?
That she was the one stopping Clark from killing Lex, when she stole the suit to use it herself in the first place?
That she can handle powers, when she cant handle her own life?
That what they have was true love, when they always break apart as soon as theres a problem in between?
ETC... you get my point.
Lanas arc was awful, I hope I wont see her again, but I still want Clark to make it clear that his feelings for her are over, and buried.
And bring me my Lois back!
She can sweep him off his feet any day of the week...
I think Lex and Brainiac are the best villains... though if Lana was in the poll...
And those five moments are VERY LAME!
I could not care less for Lana!
Or Alicia...
And Kara was cut off after a season... and Jonathans death is uncanon.
So non of them are in my top.
Moments like Clarks epiphany in Oddissey, him realising what being a hero truly was in Identity, becoming a journalist, those are worthy moments.

Haha, yeah, some of the comments from last week were pretty harsh, but I really think it has to do with fans getting tired of the same old routine: Lana shows up, gets Clark all confused, leaves him, shows up again, etc. We've seen/watched variations of the same plot so many times, that we can't help but feel dread when we see Kristin's name in the credits (and of course, it's nothing against the actress, herself). I think, at this point, most fans see Lois as Clark's new love interest, and want to see the writers moving on with that new aspect of his life.
That being said, I think it would be fantastic if the writers could incorporate/remix more of the Superman/Kryptonian mythos, deal with the Doomsday plot, and (!!) somehow push Clark toward the realization that he does, in fact, have feelings for Lois. For me, some of the greatest moments this season have been the awkward moments between Clark and Lois. I think it would be safe to say that during those scenes, we're all rooting for the couple.
Which brings me to my final point: I first got into Smallville because it was about a young man struggling with growing up (and superpowers just happened to be part of that struggle). Somewhere along the way, the show became more and more focused on the superpower part of it--which is fine, but I feel that it gets more and more difficult to identify with the plot/characters. Maybe if the writers could bring back more of that "everyday struggle" bit...? e.g. Clark working at the Daily Planet, dealing with (weird/loopy/crazy) co-workers, living on his own, buying a car (motorcycle?), etc. And of course, with superpower complications on the side, because that's what makes Smallville unique. ;p

i dig what kristin kreuk is saying because she's an actor. many of my actor friends in NY and DC basically lament the same thing. financial considerations aside, most gainfully employed actors want to be able to have a "compelling" story to tell and that challenges them. they also want to work with other great actors because that just makes them that much better. (the unemployed ones just want to land a paying gig. period.) i hope KK has the opportunity to stretch her wings as an actor; it’s fairly obvious that SV is pretty much a dead end for her.
i would like this to be the last season and have the writers wrap up storyline(s) and concentrate on CK continue his training to become the man of steel. i would also like to see him fly in regular street clothes (sans superman tights). i think it might be a good idea to have sam jones back for the remainder of the season. i think it's good for clark to bounce off ideas from a male friend. having chloe as a friend can only go so far. but i gotta say, the chloe/jimmy wedding storyline was a lame-ass idea in the first place. nuf said about that one. it might also be nice to see clark’s mom every now and then. i personally think it was a bad idea bringing in the characters of doomsday AND tess what’s-her-name. they should have settled on one villain. (but i do like looking at sam witwer – he’s just too easy on the eyes!) the set design move to metropolis and the daily planet was a bit precipitous. apparently, someone forgot that the name of the show was “Smallville.” Superman and Lois Lane is a given. why tell me something i already know? (maybe if erica durance was a better actor this would be a non-issue.)
the problem i have with this season is the writing. the writers want to do too much in too little time. (they bit off more than a season can handle.) if the network and producers decide on a 9th season, i’m not sure i’ll tune in because, as it is, i’m struggling through S8—it’s getting harder and harder to tune in every week. not sure if i have enough gas to make it to the end. i’m not even decided if i’ll purchase the S8 DVD. what is most ironic for me is that i tuned into SV BECAUSE of the writing. Can’t believe the uninspired turn it has taken.
the SV the writers could take a hint from “ER” who’s wrapping up 15 seasons. the writers there are doing a good job in scripting in former characters of the show—tying up loose ends and introducing new storylines only as necessary (without much need for further development). that makes for a nice farewell.

This season has been going well except for one thing, the return of Lana and horrible "ending" to their failure of a relationship. I hope the writers realize that this is not Lanaville. Other than that, the show's going well. Please bring back Lois. She makes the episodes brighter and better and she is Clark's soulmate, his destiny.

Everyone wants a season 9. Make it so!
Posted by: Kevin | February 13, 2009 11:33 PM
I'd like to start at the beginning with the KK/LL question. Kristin's 'great', but Lana has done so much wrong by making decisions based on whether she had 'inside' knowledge or not. She's ALWAYS craved 'Power', and that's an 'Ugly' addiction that Usually destroys character. Obviously, she could never really like herself, so she chose to become someone else or 'more' of who she thought that she was. It's SAD! So, NO, let her stay away from Smallville And Clark. IMO, the whole mood of the show becomes dark and heavy when she's present. There's always a feeling of underlying dread.
The 'Finale' question: I chose the MEGA Battle between Superman & Doomsday with it leaving Clark for dead...A Cliffhanger; Duh! That paves the way for 'A Season 9'... Hello!
The most memorable scenes or moments of Smallville for me were S1= When Jonathan reveals Clark's origins to him. S2= When Clark gets his heat vision at school and has to go home & explain what happened to his parents; Clark's 1st meeting with Virgil Swann; When Clark blew up his spaceship & accidentally caused his mom to lose their baby & him searching frantically for the Red-K class ring before running away to Metropolis. S3= When Jonathan, armed with temporary superpowers, fought Clark to bring him back home; When Clark accidentally Blinded himself & his superhearing kicked in, the scene in the barn where his parents helped him gain control over it with all the machines running noisily while his dad whispered to him until Clark heard him. S4= The 'Flight' scene in "Crusade"; the final scene between Clark/Lionel & Loinel/Clark in the prison in "Transference"; the 2nd meteor shower & the 'raising' of the FoS.
S5= Clark in FOS saving Chloe & learning that she knows his 'secret'; Lana AND Jonathan's death scenes, before & at the graveyard, the scene at the end of "Vengeance" when Lana had found Jonathan's stolen watch for Clark & watching the video of him & his dad riding the tractor in the snow when he was a little boy waving Good Bye. I cry every time I watch that scene. S6= Clark disguised as The Green Arrow to fool Lois & their 1st kiss that followed; The 'nascent' Justice League with the big explosion in the background; Lex & Lana's wedding; the battle between Clark & Titan in "Combat"; Clark & Lex's escape scene in "Nemesis".
IT'S TOO DIFFICULT! The choices the others above me made are Great as well. Ahhh!!
IT'S HOPELESS FOR ME TO NARROW IT DOWN TO ONLY 5, Because I have Favorite Memorable Moments from EACH Season.
